After months of hard work, the latest scheme to enhance the streets of St Helier is nearing completion.
The opportunity to redevelop Seale Street and its junction with York Street came about in 2008 when the Honorary Police moved from the Town Hall to new offices in Nelson Place. The resulting release of Police parking spaces allowed a re-think on the requirement for vehicles and pedestrians in this busy part of town. As a result, a plan developed to not only widen pavements in Seale Street, but to also build on and complement the pedestrianisation work already being undertaken in York Street.
Now the results of this planning are nearing fruition. Seale Street is open again to
traffic while Parish workers complete the final work on laying the pavement and kerbstones outstide the Town Hall. A new pedestrian crossing at the top of Seale Street to link the York Street pavements will complete safety enhancements while additional unloading bays will help local traders.
The new paved areas in Seale Street and York Street highlight the impressive skills of the Parish stonemason teams. As passers-by, we often take pavements and walls for granted without a thought being given to the high quality efforts needed to ensure the town centre looks as good as it does. Yet getting things looking just right is a very skilled job. Whether using existing stocks of Jersey granite or imported stones from Brittany and elsewhere, the stonemasons cut, chisle, shape, dress and point to ensure the perfect finish. Next time you are walking through St Helier make sure you take a moment to look.
