The Sixth St Helier Dance Festival got off to a lively start on Friday 5th March when Jersey’s Rock ‘n’ Rollers filled the floor of the Town Hall Assembly Room dancing to the music of The Grumpy Old Men. For those wishing to brush up their steps, a Jive lesson was given by Ania Deichsel, and during the intermission Daniel Thomas and Emily Glancy impressed all present with a lively demonstration of the Lindy Hop.
There were more opportunities to learn to dance on the Saturday morning with lessons in both the Cha-Cha-Cha by Ania Deichsel and Lindy Hop by Daniel Thomas and Emily Glancy.
The Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, welcomed everyone to Saturday’s Ballroom and Latin event before handing over to compère Terry Arthur. Local dancers Daniel (16-years-old) and Lauren (13-years-old) who were trained by Jean Jones gave a beautiful demonstration of the Waltz and Tango. Then it was time for dancers from Jenny Towers’ Dance Time Studios to combine the Viennese Waltz with an elegant line dance to dazzling effect.
Making a return visit to the Island were professional Latin American dancers Andrew Cuerden and Hannah Haarala with their superb presentation of five dances. The Paso-doble, Samba, Rumba, Cha-Cha-Cha and Jive left the audience almost as breathless as the dancers themselves.
Rounding the Festival off, the ever-popular Tea Dance took place on Sunday afternoon, hosted by Jenny Towers. With plenty of opportunities to work off the calories on the dance floor no one felt guilty about indulging in a slice or two of cake with their cup of tea.
The event was organised by the Dance St Helier Group. For more information click
