At a recent Parish Assembly, ratepayers agreed to fund the next important stage in St Helier’s move to introduce recycling.
Following extensive trials, discussions and negotiations, the Parish is now ready to move forward with plans to introduce the collection of recyclables across St Helier. A key requirement is a suitable facility to receive and sort recyclable waste prior to its despatch for re-use. On the 21 April 2010, a Parish Assembly approved a spend of £250K to construct a purpose-built recycling shed at the Parish Depot at Mont-a-l’Abbé.
Commenting after the vote, St Helier’s Constable Simon Crowcroft said ‘This important decision by ratepayers allows us to move forward with plans for a greener approach to waste in St Helier. We have had great support recently on this initiative. I look forward to the completion of this project following which we can begin fully implementing the new approach.’
The shed, which will be constructed using special materials costing less that standard metal clad buildings, is expected to be complete within four months of receiving planning approval.
