An orderly German village on the eve of World War I is struck by a series of strange and malevolent events. The culprits would appear to be the local children - but what has made them act this way and how is their behaviour connected to the horrors that are to come? Shot in black and white, this brooding, elegiac epic was a triple winner at Cannes this year.
