Plastic-Free St Helier

Plastic-Free St Helier

Now that the Parish of St Helier has exceeded the commitment to Plastic Free Jersey to reduce three single use plastic items, we have been awarded ‘Plastic-Free’ status.

The three commitments are that we would:-

  • Remove single use plastic cups from Parish offices;
  • Investigate pen alternatives, with the focus being to remove plastic pens. Unfortunately plastic-free pens are not commercially viable, so the Parish is holding a pen amnesty instead. No new pens will be purchased until all current resources have been depleted;
  • Remove single use coffee and tea cups from Parish offices. A further step has been taken in this area to also remove single use coffee and tea cups from non-Parish meetings taking place at the Town Hall.

The Parish has also committed further by requesting both al fresco permit holders and event organisers not to use single use plastic in their al fresco areas or at their events, and encouraging them to join the Plastic-Free Jersey campaign at https://bit.ly/2NYv14w,

The Constable of St Helier said: ‘I am pleased with the Parish’s progress in this important challenge to reduce the quantity of single use plastics in our organisation. Clearly there is a long way to go, but this is an important first step.’
