Shadow Conseil, the Role of a Member

Shadow Conseil, the Role of a Member

The Role

As a member of the Shadow Conseil you will have different roles to balance. You will engage with parishioners, groups, and organsiations on a wide range of different issues and take on an important community leadership role. At the Conseil meetings, you will contribute to the development of policies and strategies, advise the Constable and Roads Committee, and contribute to the development of proposals for the future of the Conseil Municipal.

In order to understand and represent parishioners’ views and priorities, you need to build strong relationships and encourage parishioners to make their views known and engage with you and the Conseil. Good communication and engagement is central to being an effective member.

As a member, parishioners will expect you to:

  • respond to their queries and investigate their concerns
  • communicate decisions that affect them
  • know the Parish and be aware of any problems
  • know and work with representatives of local organisations, government, interest groups and businesses
  • communicate their views at Conseil meetings
  • act in the best interest of the Parish at all times.

You will be expected to attend scheduled meetings in the early evening, approximately once per month, as well as any specific sub committees that may be established that you choose to join. In addition, Parish Assemblies are held monthly throughout the year, and you may want to attend any where matters of interest are on the agenda.

The youth member's responsibilities will be the same as every other member but with a requirement to present the views of young people within the Parish. You can find out more about the youth member role here.

The role is not remunerated, and in the first instance members will be elected for a period running to December 2020.

Code of conduct and standards

As a member you will be required to adhere to the Code of Conduct, based on a similar document for States Members.

The Parish maintains a Register of Interests. You must register any appropriate interests within 28 days of taking office.
