St Mark's Church : 175th Anniversary Concert

Sunday 13th October sees the 17th Anniversary of the opening of St Mark's Church in David Place. Over those 175 years, thousands upon thousands have come to St Mark's to worship, to pray, to celebrate their wedding or the birth of a child or to seek comfort after the loss of a loved one, or even just to view the beautiful Victorian architecture. So many people have treasured memories of coming to St Mark's over the years, which means it has a very special place in many of our hearts.

St Mark’s has had many special visitors over the years, none more so than Queen Victoria and Prince Albert during their visit to Jersey on 6th August 1846. The Visit of the Queen was celebrated with a triumphal arch being built across David Place: 'the bells pealed forth a joyous sound as the Sovereign passed, while a group of school children on the steps of St Mark’s sang the national anthem. It was a most affectionate scene and one that appeared to deeply impress the Royal pair.'

We are thrilled to say that His Excellency Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton, GCB, and his wife Lady Dalton, will be joining us for our 175th Anniversary celebrations, plus many other dignitaries from across the Island.

Everyone is warmly invited to a wonderful concert on Saturday 12th October at 7:30pm, where the Holme Chase choir will be performing alongside some amazing Jersey soloists.

St Mark’s is one of the few venues in St Helier that has a capacity of over 700, and it is increasingly used for a whole host of community events. During the Christmas period last year over 3000 people came and visited St Mark’s for school carol services, a beautiful Christmas concert and other special services. Come and see how we are planning to transform the building into an even more majestic concert, church and conference venue.

In the celebration service on Sunday 13th October with the Rt. Rev'd. Trevor Wilmott present, there will be a special moment to give thanks and remember your wedding or christening here too. So if you were married here would you 'phone in and join us for this celebration.

Do you have any special memories of St Mark’s Church that you would like to share? Perhaps these may be of your child’s christening, your marriage or attending St Mark's during the Occupation? We plan to record some of these stories on video too, so if you have a special memory or some photographs then do please get in touch.
